21Feb2015-Melb Mkt_DFO_SKilda_WhiteNight

(1) South Melbourne Market

Tom called us in the morning saying he and Serina would be in town and asked us to join them at South Yarra Market. At that time, only Robin, Fred and myself were in the apartment. Chin and Law had left in the morning for their usual 'museums' hopping.

First we went to fetch Natalie from her singing lesson and then walked just a few blocks away to the market.

The market is huge. Bigger than Prahan market at Chapel St that we went yesterday.

Since 1867, South Melbourne Market has been a treasured inner city landmark and a favorite among locals and visitors. It is a place not only to purchase fresh produce, but to meet, eat, drink and discover.

Here you can find rare meat such as Alaskan snow crab, myriad types of cakes and desserts, plants and flowers, souvenir, cooked food, etc.

That's our lunch at the Market

Dandelion plants must be around the market as we saw dandelion seed floating around us on our way back to the car park.

Also, there was this huge ruler on the wall of a building and some of us took turns to measure our height.

(2)Melbourne DFO @South Wharf
Our next destination was the duty free shops at South Wharf. Tom, Serina and Nat joined us for a while at the outlets as they have other matters to attend to in the afternoon.
We spent a couple of hours at the DFO mainly in the Superdry, Nike and Kathmandu shops.

We got superdry Tshirts at prices from $12 to  $24. This was a huge difference from the same Ts we saw at Vivocity Tangs that sells them from $50 onwards.

Fred saw this new design Nike running shoe that is so pliable you can bend and even wash it in the washing machine selling for $112.
We saw in Queensway shopping ctr the last time it was selling at $299
(the exchange rate at this time was 1AUD= 1.06 SGD, so we took it as 1AUD to 1SGD)

The service in Superdry was superb. The staffs were very friendly and conscientious in their service. For instance, when testing our T shirt, if we found that the size did not fit us, we would normally go back to the rack and get another size. In this instance, the staff instead would asked us to wait at the fitting room and brought us the size that we wanted.

Robin got several items from the Kathmandu shop . This beautiful red hiking jacket that he was wearing, he said it would cost much more in Singapore.

(3) St Kilda

A little walk out of the beach to the end of Esplanade Rd, we came across this amusement park called Luna Park. We did not go in but could see viking and roller coaster from outside.

Just round the corner of Luna Park is Acland St. This is bustling area in St Kilda where you have lots of eateries and shops.

We saw this Schnitz cafe at Acland St and knew that we must try.

Schnitz is Australia’s first pan-cooked schnitzel franchise, offering a delicious range of made-to-order Schnitzels served in warm Turkish Rollz, soft Tortilla Wrapz and Meal Packz.

We settled for the Dory fish salad, the parma and schnitz rolls(strange why they are called rolls and not burgers).

Currently there is no Schnitz franchise in Singapore. Perhaps soon someone will bring in this franchise.

After dinner, the guys were tempted to try the cakes along the street. I used Yelp app to get review of the cakes shops and we settled for Europa cake shop just a few steps away. The cheese cake was ok but the chocolate cake tasted a bit funny. Some of us thought it was the unique taste of this cake but Fred and Chin who were more discerning could tell that it was stale. We knew from Tom that in Australia you could return goods after purchase even when after it has been used, without question being asked. But the chocolate cake was already half eaten. We were debating whether to return the cake but finally we decided to forget it.
We should have return it to test out this policy but we thought that they might just give us another cake as replacement instead of refund.

(4) Melbourne White Night

Inspired by Paris' Nuit Blanche and international network o White Night programmes around the world, White Night Melbourne, was held for one night only on Saturday 21 Feb 2015.
The event ran from 7pm to 7am and visitors would be able to experience the visual arts, exhibitions, spectacular illuminations, music, theatres, films design, performance on display, etc.
It was reported that there were half a million visitors to this event.

We were told of this event by Leigh, the Blythe exhibition organizer the previous day, so we have to see it for ourselves

Crowd walking towards the event venue
The crowd was so overwhelming that an announcement was made in the train that the train would not stop at Flinders Street station which was the closet station to the event. We had no choice but to stop 1 station before, Parliament station, and walked about 20 mins to the event venue.

We were all in Exhirating mood !!
In front of the projection wall

Luminous bodies danced and glowed in front of
National Gallery of Victory
Huge Octopus tentacles coming out
